Opening Doors. Strengthening Families. Ending Institutional Care

Across Europe, hundreds of thousands of children survive in institutions. This is hugely traumatising and abusive to children. The consequnces of institutionalisation are devastating, for children, families and communities. The EU, and the European governments, if committed to observing children"s rights, if committed to their citizens, should end institutional care. This is possible, and within our reach. Today, a pan-European campaign, initiated by Eurochild and Hope and Homes for Children, called Opening Doors,  is initiated in 12 countries, calling on the EU and national governments to put an end to institutionalisation and abuse upon children.

In Romania, more than 60% of the children remaining in institutions have disabilities. Across Europe, the percentage is the same. The next European structural funding frame 2014 - 2020, offer the possibility of ending institutional care. By 2020, in Romania, the institutionalisation of children can be terminated, so that all children in state care enjoy family-like care.

On Alexandru Tomescu, Levers, the Stradivarius Tour and HHC Romania

Some years ago, in summertime, Dan, my neighbour called me to his courtyard. "Come and meet somebody", he said. Alexandru was on top of an old, off-road vehicle. He was using a lever, and some bulky tools, the size of his arms. I shook a hand full of engine oil. I knew of his creative musical experiments. As a music lover, I had already been impressed by his picturesque approaches, by his play with the violin, and the way in which he managed to bring classical music back to people"s attention. And looking at those levers and at those heavy tools, at the black oil on his hands, I was smiling, imagining Alexandru holding a violin in his hand, and a delicate bow. A strange contrast, sheltered by the same man. We spoke at length about music, mountains, nature, but also about children and families we work with in Hope and Homes for Children. We discussed about how much thousands of children still suffer in institutions, without love, without attachment, without families. And that is how, somewhat naturally, the initiative of linking music and Alexandru"s violin to the cause of my organisation - was born. Because, as music binds souls together, our projects unite families and save children, offering them love in a family. Alexandru works to the cultural fibers of our soul, the same way in which HHC Romania works for a Romania in which every child lives in a home and in a family.

What Alexandru does through music, we do through action. And the Stradivarius Tour is a stage set up of this complementary vision: on the one hand, culture, violin and the genius of an artist; on the other, the tough reality of the poverty in which thousands and thousands of children and their families strive to stay together, supported by HHC Romania. The Stradivarius Tour confirms the force of the link between Alexandru and HHC Romania. Just as unexpected and dissonant the image of a violin player"s hands full of dirty engine oil, just as vigurous the image of an artist who, by the touch of his bow, remembers everyone that every child needs a family. And that, without this, we stay stuck in a case tormenting our souls, like the skeleton of an old car.

I think that is why I had to know Alexandru with the levers in his hands.

Sorin Danescu"s Charity Sale. Dedicated to HHC Romania

Sorin Dănescu is the man who could do anything else, but auction his own personal collection, carefully gathered in a life time. He does this for HHC Romania. Somehow, I do not know how, he decided to do this. He auctions his original posters, with the signatures of Holywood sacred monsters. Or an absolutely fantastic music box, which takes you back in time, when seeing it. Or an Edwardian sofa, a James Drummond painting, an Outboard Seagull boat engine, made in 1957, and others - his entire collection of rare objects is offered for the children and families in our programmes. Sorin does this without any expectation of gratitude. Without false pretence. You just think it is good there are such people in this world, people who do so much and expect nothing in exchange...

Both me, and my colleagues, know what Sorin expects: he expects us to help as many children and families as possible, and to do with their lives what he does with his own memories, which he gives up without reservation.

Actually, I think that both for me, and for my colleauges, it is exactly these fantastic things that give us the energy to move on: if Sorin can do so much, certainly we are capable of doing everything we can for the families and children who need us awfully: help them. Unconditionally. Naturally.

The Launch of the Regional Training Centre for Specialists Working with Single-Parent Families

Today, in Baia Mare, HHC Romania launches officially the Regional Training Centre for Specialists working with single-parent families. Developed in a POSDRU programme, the service is to ensure the training of more than 700 employees in childcare and social services, by the end of the year. The risks for single-parent families are huge:  without support, they live a tough dilemma: how could they both work, and care for their children? Who should they leave their children with, as long as they are gone working? How to manage, with the very few resources they earn, how to feed their children, how to pay rent, expenses, and buy clothes? How to live from one month to the other, with all this on their shoulders? The training centre is to help them through. Here, we work with the employees in social services and the childcare system, whose roles in supporting single-parent families - is essential.
